Two Lasting Bequests

Thoughts on adoption and other things dear to my heart.

Roots and wings

“There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: One is roots; the other, wings.”

-Hodding Carter

I do not take adoption lightly. Parenting, in and of itself, is an immensely important (and sometimes overwhelming) task. Then there are the added responsibilities and challenges of parenting a child born into a culture and experience very different than my own. I believe one of my greatest challenges, however (and every parent’s great challenge, I suppose), is to create and maintain a safe place of belonging, while helping my children discover and develop their truest selves. Roots and wings.

We still have a few months of paperwork and appointments ahead of us before the true waiting begins. Realistically, that is probably when the blogging will begin as well.

When we adopted our son over three years ago, I had no idea how much that experience would change everything. We have just begun the process toward a second (and third!) adoption, and I cannot wait to see how this experience changes things–and me.
